Medtronic is a company that, among other medical devices, manufactures a surgically implanted pulse generator device (IPG) for deep brain stimulation (DBS) that operates to control and lessen the essential tremor. The Medtronic website has a dedicated section to essential tremor with links depicting real patients with ET, DBS therapy indications, future therapies, explanations of how the device operates, and patient stories. Here, one may view the actual implanted pulse generator (IPG) device, leads, and read the accompanying description. Also available is a section about the associated risks of having deep brain stimulation including the implantation of the IPG. The personal stories are by and of those who have successfully had the procedure with the Medtronic IPG device. In addition to stories about DBS successes with the device on patients with ET, there are personal success stories of and by people who have dystonia and Parkinson’s disease. The clinical outcomes and societal impact are uplifting.
